Prep a Multi Day Hike - Introduction

We did a number of multi day hikes in the past in the Swiss Alps, but this year should be a new challenge for two main reasons:

  • the group is bigger than ever (5 hikers of different experience and fitness level)

  • we plan to go for 4-5 days without resupplies and be fully self-contained

There are a number of elements that have to be considered for such an endavor:

  1. Expectation management

  2. Route planning and logistics

  3. Equipment requirements and preparation

  4. Food requirements and group taste

  5. Contingency and emergency planning

As part of this blog series I will deep dive into each of these topics in a dedicated post. This is an evolving process and we will test all our assumptions in the field. By consciously reflecting afterwards I’d like to improve the planning process for future trips to the outdoors. This year is regarded as a trial run for something larger (e.g. Sarek expedition) in the coming years. But lets get started and tag along. I will try to describe our considerations and more a theoretical view but then also add details specific to our upcoming trip. I will describe on how we experienced or approached the specific stage and share some interesting details with you. Comments and interesting input is always welcomed.
